whats the oneida carry?

The "Oneida" carry is below Ft Stanwix and it is where during dry spells those traveling on the Mohawk would have to remove boats and such from the river and transport them roughly 2 miles to wood creek( where Ft Bull & Ft Woodcreek / Erie canal village are ) to continue their journey to Oneida lake and westward to the great lakes.
The carry played a very important role in controling commerce and goods moving west as well as troop movements during colonial times and whoever controlled it had the advantage.
It is also where one of the indian campsites was during the battle of Oriskany.
I will make it easy for you..it is across from Haun welding 8)

Originally from Rochester, I lived in Rome for about 12 years (1983 - 1995) when in the service... I loved it there. I used to rent an apartment that was located on the original fort stanwix proper! Fort Stanwix - the first place Old Glory was ever flown in battle if I'm not mistaken! Rome - The first shovel full of dirt dug for the Erie Canal... right? That place is LOADED with history! And what are there - like 10 forts around there that are little known places? The homesteads are rev war... man, that place is loaded with history!

I think there is a detecting club right there either in Rome, or there in the Mohawk Valley...

Most places have been picked over - but no way picked clean... IMO. Just watch for the protected land! I remember a few stories about guys detecting/digging muskets and the like, but, they found it on fed land... they were caught, and they payed big time.

I have in-laws all over the place in Rome... I miss it.

YES YES and YES ...First place the old red-white & blue went up a flag pole ! Yes the first shovel full of dirt was turned over by where Erie canal village is and Yes there were 7 forts I believe not including Stanwix.

Barre St Ledger held Stanwix (British built for the F & I war / American rebuilt and used for the Rev. war ) at bay for 2 weeks in the great British foul up to gain control of the Mohawk valley ...So much is under parkinglots now but there are neighborehoods and backyards I want to hunt some day !!!!
