Thanks for looking.

Casey, your find is definitely not any type of button. The fold-over tabs on it back edge were for attaching it onto fabric or leather or similar material.

My analysis, and resultant ID-opinion:
Because the space between the underside of the folded tab and the disc's rim is thin rather than thick, I believe it was attached to a material thinner than typical sheet-leather. (The photo below shows a WW-1 era US army horseharness accouterment disc, with a visibly "thick" space between the tab's fold and the disc's rim.) I suspect your find was attached to a hat... which makes it a hat-ornament/hat-emblem.

That's my analysis. I could be incorrect. That happens sometime.

About its age:
I am certain it is not as old as the civil war era. The fold-over tabs for hat-insignia and horseharness accouterments came into vogue in the very-late 1800s/very-early 1900s, and still being manufactured today.

My apologies for the late response TheCannonballGuy. I thought I replied to your response but didn’t. I completely agree with your assessment and it makes perfect sense with the fold over tabs where it would have folded over the material. Thank you so much for your time and research on this.
