I found this what used to be a ring a while back. The "ring" broke off of the casing of the stone, but inside of it was inscribed "to Laura 08". I have heard that often times people would set really nice stones in metals other than gold or silver, which would be the case here. I would like to know how to find out if this is a ruby, or what it is otherwise. It is a strikingly beautiful stone, briliant light red with major"fire from the facets and the way it's cut. It is cold to the touch and very hard, with no chipping or scarring that has occurred. No telling how long in the ground. Could it be ruby?
