I made a field trip to two likely rural sites on public land south of Lawrence, KS. The finds weren't what I expected.

A visit to the site of three former buildings (now gone), which I found on an old map, yielded literally nothing. So I explored a large campsite with fire ring nearby. There were too many signals to dig (bottle caps) but I did find weird brass-studded belt fragments, tent pegs, and a 1978 nickel.

At the base of a nearby stone wall I found a chunk of barbed wire with flat barbs, the first I've ever found.

Then, onto the site of a former school, now completely vanished except for a cornerstone. It now serves as an illegal firing range. Some butterfingers had dropped a live 30-06 round, which was lying right on the ground. Otherwise, lots of shotgun shells, some brass, a spent bullet, and iron stuff that looks like stove parts.

Four hours without much to show. I wish I had a 30-06 rifle. There's also a 44 magnum shell, a 22 rimfire shell, and a couple others I can't identify. 22 Hornet, perhaps?

Also saw a bald eagle, and a 3-inch bird nest. The eagle wouldn't let me photograph him, but the nest cooperated.
