Rust?

Ok i am finding loads of strange old metals but there so old there thick with rust. Wats the best way to thin the rust dawn so I can Identify what the object is?

With a sanding attachment on a rotary drill (like dremel) especially if the object has a flat surface. Each project requires different
tools. The rust will eventually devour the metal if not removed.
