Rusty pan

I was told to leave my pan outside to rust up to make it easier to catch the gold is this true or is somebody pulling my leg

Rust just might catch some fine gold. Get a plastic pan and don't worry.

Yep, you want the metal pans to rust, creates small pits in the metal that help catch the gold. Burning them first is recommended, it burns off all the oils put on them to keep them from rusting and the oils will make gold float. Burn it, let it rust and go get the gold.
