looking for an Explorer
Hi Everyone,

Saturday turned out to be a dismal day kida got me down as I only found 11 memorial cents all day

Sunday Though started out the same but at a site I had luck with exactly one month ago with my CZ5. First 2 hours I dug a lot of deep Iron and junk and maybe .46 in clad. But then out pops the 1945P war nickel, then it got fun next I worked an area that I haven't worked there before due to all the nails and iron from the torn down house. Nest thing to come out was a mercury dime 1918D. As I procededto work around the other side of the foundation out comes 3 wheats with in minutes of each other 1929.1940 and 1944. Then came the price to me of the day a standing liberty with the date 1928. I used the explorer the whole time and had my cz5 as back up but refused touse it until I figure this monster out.
Here are my setting I ran in;
Iron mask -10
advance responce deep and fast ( am I wrong for running both?)
sens 22 manual
contrast max due to bright shiney day
threshold just over barely audible
I dug alot of junk trying to find the nickel spot on the machine as I like nickels. I also worked on my pinpointing and used a homemade probe, that I made from a .99 walmart steak turner I need work with it but it did help me from dinging up the coins and iron.
Oh yeah this yard I am working has now produced 7 silver coins and over a dozen wheats so far, it only dates back to the mid 1920's.
I had fun and felt like I was getting somewhere today with the explorer.

Looks like the house burned down, just guessing.

Ive read the Explorer is a complicated machine but it sounds like you are getting it pegged! That standing liberty half is a prize indeed! Very nice finds!

Nice finds. Seems like the SLQ is the flavor of the week. I found my first last weekend. They are hard to come by. Probably more at the site. Good luck.

You did good Silver! I have a friend that bought a Explorer and she is having a bit of a time learning it! But looks like you are well on your way! Great finds!!

Congrats!!

;)

Nice finds and congrats on the SLQ with a date! HH, Mike

Nice finds, Silverfinder! I have owned and used an Explorer XS over 5 years. It is hard to master, but it pays large dividends when you understand it. I use mine in the "fast and deep" recovery mode, also. The sound changes and the
display may not show an item exactly where it does normally. I also run my threshhold a little louder because I want to hear any change in the sound for deep targets. And slow down your swing!!!! If you don't already have a copy of "Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S" by Andy Sabisch get it! The book makes understanding the Explorer a snap. I never use mine in the digital mode because I want all the information that the unit can give me. It doesn't sound like you need it but Good Luck anyway.

Very nice sounds like you have the settings right for your spot. I have a Explorer like it alot but it is heavy.

I usually have my Explorer XS in iron mask -13 or -14. You will get deep iffy signals that sometimes bounce along the top of the screen because the coin is so deep that it is having trouble identifying it or there is a nail by it. I dug up a wheat penny today in yard that had a nail laying right next to it. I am impressed that you had a nice threshold at 22 sens. I was in a yard today where I had to have at 6 before I could get a treshhold.

When I think I might have a nickel I switch it over to digital (I always keep it in smart) and they usually read anywhere from 4-6... with the occasional 3 mixed in there.

Now it's time to invest in the sunray probe for the explorer... it is well worth the money spent! Then get the 15" WOT coil..... man oh man do i love the exlplorer ;)

Thanks everyone, I got the book mastering the explorer and my x-1 probe just came in today :) so all I need is a site to hunt and the day off to get out there and find so stuff.

After you read the book and go out hunting a few more times then go to http://www.detectorgear.com/ and read his tips on how to use the Explorer. He takes it one step further than Andy's book.

Very nice, however, it doesn't compare to your Morgan.

Great finds!!!

Great finds!!! I generally run in deep and fast too. There's a lag in the signal when running in deep only. If there's little metal in the ground, it will get you a little more depth. But if there's much metal at all, then the lag can make it frustrating trying to tell which target to pin point. WTG!!! HH
