Hi,

Found seven of these buttons at a farmhouse in New Hampshire along with a scabbard chape that looks like it is from a sword scabbard similiar to the 1850 foot officers sword.? The buttons say New Hampshire on the front and "Scoville MF'G Co Waterbury" on the back.? I have seen similiar ones for New Hampshire but they all said "Vol Militia" on them ... these do not.? I contacted the Waterbury Button company and they sent me a pattern that they have on file but it is not an exact match to the ones that I have.? Anyone have any idea as to who these were issued to and when?

Thanks for any help that you can provide

Hi Buckram

Thanks for the reply. I am not generally either a button collector or a relic collector per say. Although lately my interest has been peaked! Any chance of getting an image of the #NH-2 and #NH-2b? I have an image sent to me by the Waterbury company that was similiar (like you pointed out). The other thing that doesn't make sense is that certain websites claim that this backmark was used between 1850 and 1865. Could it be pre civil war instead of post?

It is sounding like it probably is not from the civil war but it certainly is an interesting button. Thanks for the help. When time permits I will probably try to trace back the property and then maybe can narrow it down even more.
