Scrap pile or keeper? Odd piece of metal

Hello all! I found this today at a mid 19th century home. It's interesting enough to warrant a little investigation before it goes in the scrap pile. It's quite large and appears to have had a hole that's been stripped out. I never throw anything out until I'm sure what it is... As always, any help is appreciated! (If its trash, tell me. You won't hurt my feelings ;-) )
