When I got up today and seen the sun was shining and the rain we were suppose to get just happen to vanish from the local forecast. Local Forecast! Now that’s a joke, we have all experienced some sort of weather related situation that had gone bad or in some cases turned out good Sunday they were wrong and I was happy ……No rain meant its time to go out digging and who cares that it was already 8:30 am…..I’m usually out the door around 7:00. Anyway that’s enough for the jabber about the weather. My plan all along was to go back down to that good old cow pasture that has produced a number of great colonial coins and relics in the past.

It has been since spring time that I hunted this field and the last time I was there happen to be one of my better detecting days, pulling out 5 large coppers, some old flat buttons and other misc. Relics. The plan today is to go back to were I had left off and give it a go. When I arrived at the site, I was kind of disappointed …..Cows were in the pasture, now don’t get me wrong. I love cows……. Better than that I like the Milk….So now I have to think of plan (B)……Wrong ! As I drive up the road what do I see but someone working in the feeding area and do you know it, it’s one of my friends that have given me permission. So we got into talking and after a while ,I mentioned that I would have liked to get into the pasture today but the cows are busy doing there thing and clearing the grass for me to detect…….lolol Actually there doing me a favor! Giving me that extra couple of inches of detecting depth , which in this area the coins are as deep as 10 inches in some cases. So after a short conversation he said “Those cows there , they wont bother anyone…Go right ahead”…..Now like I said earlier cows are great but being in the same area could be a challenge ….I had to think about it , but after a few seconds . WHY NOT!!! There are old coins and relics out there ….

I made my way through the gate and into the pen, well I now had 5 or 6 cows staring at me….I just kept walking and went straight to the area I had left off at earlier this year. Put on the head phones and got to it, looking behind me the whole time….Not really…I found out the cows were more interested in there green grass than me swinging this stick. I’m sure that’s what the cow thought!……

The area I’m hunting is very old and goes back to the 1790’s and the old town is long gone. This one area just seems to keep giving up old coins and between the nails and iron you will find them. My post in the spring told on how I believe this homestead burnt down and the finds are mixed with ash and other debris and melted glass in some areas. Finally after digging quite a few holes, I strike pay dirt and pull out a Bank of Montreal half Penny token 1844 which is green but very legible. As I continue out comes a few buttons and then a nice 1825 Coronet large Cent. This is one of my favorite coins to find, the best are the flowing hair or bust type.

After a couple of hours and many ,many holes dug, I find what I think is one of my best finds to date….This toy gun is a gem, first I find the handle part and then a couple of feet away I find the barrel …Now I was not sure what each piece was until I got them home an cleaned them both and noticed that they would fit together. What a surprise!!! It turns out that J.D.Frary made the gun back in 1860 and was a toy cap gun……

It is surly one of those finds you never expect to find , but that was not all ….I know everyone that detects has a list , with a number of coins or relics on it and hopes that today is the day they can scratch one off. On this day I got to scratch off two. I found a 1797 Bust large cent in the very next hole I dug and I was like a pig in....You know what!!! I now had my oldest large cent and was very happy …..and the date was very ledge able….the forth coin is something that I’m not sure of, it looks to be white metal , but on the one side it has bars all the way across and the other looks to have a part of the U from the bar coin which has USA on one side…..what ever it is , its different!

Great finds there...I've found LCs from the early 1800s but I still have not broken into the 1700s yet. At least not that I know of.... I have a few LCs that I can't get any detail off of.

If I was you I would be sleeping on that site.

Great finds!! I detected a pasture with some cows once. They were very curious and kept looking over my shoulder, but all they got to see come out of the ground was some fencing wire.
