Whatever this is looks to be made of heavy aluminum or tin and is about the size if a large lipstick case(okay larger). The middle appears to be split or blown out revealing an aluminum rod going straight up the middle of it. The bottom has a hole in it. It was found next to a early 1900s house near a road where CW soldiers were camped and people were traveling up and down.

Don't think so . It has some kind of a rod inside of it. It is flattened but if it was straightened out it would have a perfect oval hole cut into the side. The top and bottom seem like they have a nice band around them, nothing ornate though.

Carbon batteries have a carbon rod inside of them and on the photo that hole looks jagged not cut smooth. It does look like a battery like BosnMate mentioned, but we need to see the end that your finger is covering up. The positive/male end seems to always fall out.

It reminded me of an old aluminum film canister.

The end my finger is covering up is solid and flat.

I know. That's how these batteries look when they deteriorate, the male or positive end falls out and what you found is left. We find the coin shaped male ends all the time. As for the hole in the side who know could be damaged from a lawnmower, tractor, etc.
