Hello All,
vp here
I've been asked a few times about some specifics on the SE, so I thought I'd write a little of what I know and have found from using the machine pretty heavily over the past year. I am by no means an expert but think I have a pretty good understanding of the ins and outs of how I run the machine.
Hope this helps someone out.
Equipment :
Minelab SE, stock slimline coil, 5" Excelerator, 16.5" Excelerator, Sunray Probe
I metal detect in PA (mostly cornfields, forests with regular dirt and river sand/dirt) not overly mineralized soil
Settings:
Mode: Ferrous
Sensitivity: 27 (I drop it down if i hear a lot of background chatter)
Response: Deep
No Iron Mask
Digital Display (non smart find)
also I forget the setting but it makes the machine's response quieter the deeper the target gets
(verr helpful)
Readings (general from what I've found):
I base my readings on the "Perfect Clad" table I made up below
PERFECT CLAD
Pennys Fer 07 Cond 26
Nickels Fer 12 Cond 12
Dimes Fer 03 Cond 27
Quarters Fer 00 Cond 29
Halfs/Dollars Fer 00 Cond 29-30
CLAD (with variables*)
Pennys Fer 06-08 Cond 26
Nickels Fer 12-14 Cond 10-14
Dimes Fer 03-04 Cond 26-28
Quarters Fer 00-02 Cond 27-29
Halfs/Dollars Fer 00 Cond 28-30
* the better the conditions the coin is in (good soil, no junk around it, flat vs on edge, average depth
5-6 inches) the closer these numbers are to the "Perfect Clad" range above
SILVER COINS
I find these numbers are very close to the "Perfect Clad" table above EVEN with the variables skewed
a bit
i.e. I find a silver coin on edge is still very close to the "Perfect Clad" #'s of 00 29, also deeper silver
coins still read closer to these "Perfect Clad" settings
Normally the larger the silver coin, the more it will read close to these "Perfect Clad" settings
note - silver has many slight differences between the coin types
example: older dimes will read differently than a rosevelt silver dime (very slight differences,
probably the halo affect from being in the ground longer)
MOST IMPORTANT TIP
My most troublesome items before I got an SE were aluminum cans or can slaw (small pieces of
aluminum cans) and pull tabs
Now on the SE the cans can still come in as 00 29 (the perfect quarter reading) BUT the SE deals
with these exceptionally well
Example :
If you find a target 00 29 at 4 inches, hit the "Pinpoint" feature and rescan the target
A piece of aluminum will sound COMPLETELY DIFFERENT then a quarter - the can has a louder
(and sometimes longer) metal sound - where the quarter will just blip normally, in a normal tone
and cut off cleanly and abruptly
By far the best, most time saving feature on the SE in my opinion, it has allowed me to easily navigate thru trashy areas.
I have only been fooled once or twice by this, most of the time it is right on. The only consistant exception I've found is a large coin (like a dollar) at 1-2 inches.
Again, this is just from my experience. I hope it helps someone out.
Take care
