Detector(s) used
Minelab Explorer SE, Ace 250, Vibra-Probe 560
I have had my SE now about 2 months and seem to be getting a little better with it. Although most of my detecting is for CW Relics I do like to coin hunt as well in the local parks and schools.
I've been getting some decent finds, mostly clad, but not finding any nickels. Am I dioing something wrong? I have hunted in all metal and used the factory pre sets.

Where would a nickel be showing up on the screen and what digital ID range would show. Maybe I am hitting them but not digging because they are showing up as trash. I usually dig just about everything, but no nickels. They have to be there because I am hunting the same spots that I found some with my Ace 250.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, no funnies about I should keep using the Ace 250.

In all metal mode it is kind of hard to pick them out for me.They sound like foil or aluminum.
I have the same problem and dont find very many. What tone set up are you running in all metal? cond. or ferrous????
I never use the # id as i have found to many crap targets can id as a high #.

I'm running conductive. I almost always just use the factory setting when hunting coins. Not really looking for any iron. I know most people think I am missing out by not running all metal, but I just don't want to deal with all the hits that come up in all metal when I am only looking for coins.

Thanks

Yea i hear that ..i justed started trying to use it in all metal a little.Usually nicles read just above where foil pulltabs show up.
The older one usually have a different sounding tone..a more solid lower tone if that makes sense.....

i have the same problem as i am learning my SE. i found a few though and they ring in at the bottom of the screen about 3/4 of the way over to the right. try air testing a couple and you will see what i am talking about. the trouble is, that is the same place that a lot of trash rings in at as well. i am not good enough with identifying targets by sound yet to tell the difference between nickels and trash. that's something i really need to get a handle on.

I've had my Explorer for about a month now and I was having a hard time with the coin factory setting, I was getting all sorts of tones really fast and it was real confusing to me. So I had the Explorer learn the coins. All I did is in the manual. Just run the coins under the disc and save the pattern. I used every coin I had. Zinc/copper/Indian penny, clad/silver quarter, clad/silver dime etc... Helped me learn the tones of the coins. I still struggle with the pulltab/nickel tone, so I just dig it to make sure. Sometimes the pulltabs have a echo to the tone, but I dig it anyway just to be sure ;D Oh yeah I also use the ferrous tones while hunting. I found a total of 7 nickels in the last week where I found none before. Give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks Whyme, I will give it a try. I went out today, still no nickels. I did find a gold wedding band though.

just a note.. SE for 3 months... also no nick's.. i hunt conduct mode... iron mask ( very little )

Picked up another couple of nickels today. Strong tone, no echo, and no "moving" while swinging. Think I'm getting the hang of this SE and liking it more and more. ;D Now I have to research, research, research! To get those old coins.

Did you have your recovery speed set on fast??That usually causes alot of tones very quickly.

Hmmmmm. Going hunting in a few mins. I'll look and change it if it is on fast and try it out. Get back to you later ;D

Most of the time the nickels I find fall in the pull tab to foil range.

OK I tried it yesterday in all metal mode and set it to deep. It slowed the speed of the tones down a bit. I had to slow my swing down a little to really get a separation between tones. The meter still bounces all over the place. Is this normal?

digital range is 09-05, 10-05 in most cases. You'll get a specific single tone as opposed to a double blip on pulltabs etc.

Sorry forgot to mention the part about the tones sounding the way you described them. Sometimes the machine is a bit overwhelming.

The SE is like the EXP II I have as far as nickels. I also get 09-04 and 10-04. To see if I could find nickels, I got as many types as I could find and tested air readings to get an idea of what I should see number wise. When I did find a nickel I mentally noted the numbers and sound. Finding more than 1 a day helps. Also remember The nickel is the least likely lost coin (1,5,10,25 cents) due to the fact it is the least used in making change.

Yes. if you hunting a trashy area or slightly trashy area it is reading and registering all the targets it sees. you may have to slow down and swing over the targets very slowly and see if you can get them to seperate out.I usually dig any target that has a good sound and wont lock on.Usually it will be a nail or trash, but i have found several IH pennies and v nickles doing this.

Thanks for the info! I will try this for the next couple of hunts and see what happens.

On the Smartfind screen, my crosshair box usually

sits right on the bottom line of the screen in the pulltab range. It may vary some, but not much. I hunt in, and would suggest ferrous.

I always check in Digital and in fact I have been hunting in digital. The second number is usually 04 or 05 for a nickel and 06-07 or more on a tab. I find the numbers to be much more accutate than the crosshairs.

There really aren't that many common targets like tabs, bottlecaps, foil, and common coins. I am learning what most of the common target's numbers are. Then in certian sites, (newer ones), I can cherry pick using digital... (I hope).
