MIMS, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida Highway Patrol has closed part of
Interstate 95 after a truck carrying $187,000 worth of nickels
crashed and scattered coins across the road, killing one person.
The highway patrol says the tractor-trailer was carrying the
nickels from Philadelphia to Miami when it apparently rear-ended
another truck early Wednesday. Authorities say a passenger in the
truck with the coins was killed and both drivers were hospitalized.
Authorities say so many nickels spilled out that the highway is
sparkling in the Florida sun.
Florida Trooper Kim Miller says the nickels also were littering
the grass _ and that shovels might be needed to pick them up.
Secret Service and Treasury agents went to the area to make sure no
one tries to grab the coins.

heard of the accident while i was at work this morning,i use 95 to get from deltona to titusville,didn't know about the cargo though.

I saw the accident report on the news this morning, but they failed to mention the coin spill. One of my coworkers asked if I was going to take my detector to the wreck site and look for any coins that may be left behind. Later reports on the news showed the road covered with coins. WOW.

Am sure they will not be able to find all the ones in the grass, but was wondering how the highway patrol would react to an army of people with detectors all over I95. LOL

Probably would ticket you car or request that you leave the area for your own safety since no pedestrians are permitted on the interstate.

ORLANDO, FL -- Florida State troopers have a message for people digging for nickels along Interstate 95 -- It's against the law to stop except in an emergency and you can’t keep what you find.

And troopers are watching the area near Mims in Brevard County, where a truck from the U.S. Mint crashed on Wednesday, spilling more than $180,000 worth of new nickels. Traffic cameras have spotted four people stopping and digging through the dirt for nickels, FHP said on Friday.

Kind of figured that would be the way it would pan out. With my luck, if I did go, you would see me on the six o-clock new being taken away in hand cuffs. But I can dream, can't I? LOL
