SENE Paddle Drill and others!!!!

Hi folks,

So I found my second and third paddle drills of my life tossups. Two in one day I've only found 3 full ones. They are rare to come by in my locations.

The Red Rhoylite one portrays the best of workmanship seen in my area. It's perfectly made, symetrical and stunning.

The argillite one is ok too. It's a bit eroded but hey I'll take it.

The black point above is a bit odd to. Trying to get an I'd on that one if you guys could help.

I know most drills are difficult to date but Any guesses on the age based on other artifacts? I’ve got a drill just like those from what I think is an early archaic site/ possibly transitional, still trying to find enough to evidence to be confident.

This is a tough one to date. It was found in an area that has produced Jack's Reef which could be as young as 900 BP all the way to a base of a Dalton, 10k BP.

However, I do mentally grid of areas based on flaking patterns and erosion levels. This drill was found within 2 feet of the base of this Nevillebelow. The small area has waste flakes and debitage of the Red Rhoylite that made these two peices.

I therfore conclude based on a common ground level, waste flakes of Red Rhoylite, debitage of Red Rhoylite, together with the paddle drill and Neville Base, that this was a work station at least 6000 years old.

So to sum it up I'd bet it is anywhere from 6k to 7k years old. That is if Neville is dated correctly!

I believe same person that made Neville also made drill. Workshop location is a tiny little outcrop.

Also found this Red Rhoylite crude leaf knife about 15 feet from the workshop tiny outcrop.

Nice finds Chris, you're right it's rare to find 2 drills in a hunt, nevertheless 1 complete. I found 3 in a hunt one time; now I can't find any. I used to maybe find 1 a year.

Very nice finds. The first drill has the appearance of Braintree hornfels, though it could be Lockatong argillite.

The rhyolite drill would be classified as a T-base drill according to the classification scheme used in the Massachusetts Archaeological Society’s New England artifact guide. It’s not a paddle drill. Of T-base drills, the guide states: “Late Archaic-Late Woodland. These seem to derive from either Brewerton Eared Triangles or Levanna points, and have been found in assemblages containing both of them.” It would not be related to Neville points….illustration from MAS artifact guide..
