Another post got me thinking about sharks and metal detectors. Someone said they have never heard of a shark attacking a treasure hunter. . .

Since sharks are supposed to be the animal that can sense electric fields better than any other animal in the world (using their ampullae of Lorenzini)...they must be able to sense the electromagnetic fields put out by our detectors. The question is are they attracted to it, curious about it, repelled by it, or just indifferent. I'd love to stick my detector in a shark tank and see what happens.

Anybody heard anything on this topic? I just know I don't ever want to see the grey man anywhere near me while I'm out detecting.

I actually posted that I met a guy that had his scoop torn from his hand by a shark - whether he was brought in by the machine - which I think was a pulse - or by the thrashing of scooping and/or shine off the scoop itself - who knows
I know that my machines always attrack fish - must hit their lateral line - whether a pleasant feeling for them or aggitation ???
I have had a few species - that bump by coil repeatedly
i have hunted in Fla. waters and all over the Carribean without ever attracting a shark that i know of and i wear a mask 95% of the time and always look around my surroundings

I have hunted with the excal for the last 12 years in multiple beaches, sometimes with the water up to my neck. If sharks were attracted to our equipment we would have many times many stories of encounters with sharks. As it is there have been several that have had encounters with sharks, myself included. But I think it was tide / surf conditions, that facilitated the encounters (2 for me). One time I was actually bumped by a shark. Hey it's there home swimming pool, we just visit the wonderful waters. So are they attracted to our equipment, nope, we are just a food group!
