Is there a way to date a shell casing? I know very little about this. I recently acquired what is supposed to be trench art from the war. It is a kind of necklace made from 9mm shells and copper. Shells are stamped D l 42 9 mm. Would the 42 stamp have anything to do with the production year. May be a stupid question but I could use some help. Casing is 3/4 of an inch tall. :dontknow:

That would be a 9mm round made by Defense Industries of Canada in 1942, in Montreal iirc.

I was wondering if 42 was somehow the date. Thank you for your information as I'm a bit of a novice at shell stamps. I usually dig them, frame them, and leave it at that. Interesting information. Places them at least in the Military category. Thanks again mirage83!!!!!
