Hello all, been trying to research the mining history of Shirttail Creek and canyon, but there's not a ton of info online that i could find (other than how it got it's name, lore about Yankee Jim, etc...) I'm curious as to the large rock pilings about a 1/2 mile up from the American River.. It doesn't seem like traditional round river rock, but more jagged (like blasted bedrock).. I've done some relic detecting there and consistently find square nails and even some old china right near the surface of the piles, which seems odd.. Found a few old can sites with soldered cans, etc.. I'm used to seeing creeks worked by the Chinese with neatly stacked round river rocks, so i'm curious if any locals to the Forest Hill/Colfax area might shed some light on any history info they might have?

Hello
The nearest grange, school house, county seat may have some history information of the area you have questions about? At least ask if there is any historical society in the same county.

Thanks for the suggestion.. There's a museum in Forest Hill and in Auburn, but they're always closed when i hit the creek early and when i drive out late.. my drive to the area is about 2hrs so it's tough to justify the trip.. just hoping some of the locals might be in the know...
