Metal Detecting
They just started this project last week so there wasn't much to detect. But I did manage to find one Indian head cent and a V nickel. Even though some of the surrounding buildings are newer, the area probably dates to the 1860's.
I don't know if all the sidewalks are comming out, but if they are, the site should have some potential for some old coins. I just hope I can get there at the right time. (It about a 1 hour drive from home, and I have to work all week. :'(
The Indian head was found about 2 feet behind the "sidewalk closed" sign.

I had to see where you were to make sure that you weren't in my town working my sidewalk!! >:( ;D Way to go.....my hunting spot has not turned up too much so far. On your V nickel....mine that I found last year looked just like that one. I didn't even know what I had for about two hours. I recently gave mine a soak in the Salt/vinegar solution and it is beautiful now. Mine was badly corroded, so it's not in the best of shape, but at least it's silver again and I can see the date clearly.

Happy Hunting,
Moon

The back of the V nickel has a shiny spot where the crud flaked off. ???

Yes, this is good area to hunt. The first picture is one block north of public libary. Towards the west of first picture i dug the found 10 cents today post from last year. Both were shield nickles 1868 and 1869. To the east is burns park. Looking to the east towards bluffs in later photos three blocks down on the left is where the Dahlonega gold coin was found. At the 8 th street sign, you are in a two-three block radius of several finds i posted on here. The ones i remember are the 1873 nickle 3 center. My only 1862 IH ( both Janurary frozen ground finds in demo sites.), 1865 3 center, and a nice 1867 Ih. Even if you get there last Bk, the locals swing their coils too fast. One there still had not gotten a V-nickle. Many coins remain in these now exposed areas. Targets of oppertunity, This is the hot site i posted on here last week.

Thanks for the info Pete!
Two years ago when they tore up 7th street (only 1 block away) I found 2 Seated quarters, A large cent, A Barber half, and a slug of IH cents.
As I posted earlier:

Removing old sidewalks are a great place to hunt....Those place can give up some serious coins....You should find out where they are taking the dirt they are hauling away! there you will find more coins ! You can bet on it...........Good luck ! 8)

HEY BK I KNOW THAT TOWN. LOL YOU ARE ALWAYS FIRST ON GREAT SITES LIKE THAT. I MISS THOSE SIDEWALKS AND STREETS. WHEN THEY DO THE STREETS HERE THEY JUST TAKE TOP ASPHALT OFF CHOP UP AND PUT BACK DOWN. NO DIRT DIGGING >:( OH WELL KEEP UP GOOD WORK AND KEEP FINDING THOSE GOODIES. BE CAREFUL. I HEARD SOMEONE WEST OF YOU IS GETTING A MINELAB. GOOD LUCK

Great coins, good luck with future finds

Cool site bk. Too bad you don't have all summer to hunt that area.

For the last 13 years I've been hunting a site about 2 acres in size that only dates to about the late 1800's (active). Every year I find better and older stuff. Already this year I've found more older and better coins than I have in all the previous years put together.

Find an undeveloped piece of ground in the middle of an old city and you've got treasure.

Hope you pull some more goodies out before it gets the base rock on it. Tsgman

Keep at it! There's still more there, gotta be some silver here or there. ;)

Congrats!

Chris
