Zinc plated.

A common experiment in chemistry class in both middle school and high school is an introduction to chemical plating. Pennies are cheaper to acquire than the blank discs the school supply companies push.

When I was about 12, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we were taught techniques to make zinc plating appear both silver and gold in color.

Time for more coffee.
