I haven’t had a chance to post lately so this is a catch up post for the last hunts.
I went back onto a hill across from a civil war encampment. The ground that was the encampment is now totally covered by buildings and pavement. I have been on the hill several times and found about 12 civil war bullets. I found most of them on one section of the hill and a few on another part. I went this time to see if there were more on the second part. I did some wandering on my way to the spot and found a few bullets that are old post civil war bullets and some shotgun headstamps.
When I got to my spot and I started seeing fresh holes. There were about a dozen in all and they were small. I don’t know what they dug up, because they took the finds with them, but they should have filled the holes even if it is only in the middle Ipoh of the woods. I worked the area around and between the holes. It was pretty clean, but I did find 7 aluminum beer cans on the surface ( I took them with me) so the other detectorist skipped those and didn’t even move them to check to see if there was anything there. While I was doing that I did find one .58 caliber minie about 2 inches down that game me a nice high tone o the CZ21.
All in all I found a piece of horseshoe, 2 big square spikes, 7 bullets, a brass pistol casing marked with a U and a big knife.
This first one looked like it might be civil war, but I noticed a diamond pattern and it is light so I believe it is a 16 gauge rifle slug from a deer hunter. Except for the minie most of the bullets have ribbed grooves so they are post 1880. Some have a heavy laver of oxidation with the dark staining from decaying leaves like on civil war bullets I find close to the surface in the woods. So they are old, just not civil war old.
And of course a huge 3 blade knife that was on the surface. Not too much rust so I am guessing it was lost last fall or winter by a hunter.
Hunt number 2 was back on campus. 64 coins with a face value of $3.89, screw-in cleats, a key and a centennial Olympics pin (1996 Atlanta). The pin is in bad shape but it kept things interesting.
Hunt number 3 was on campus as well. 121 coins with a face value of $6.61, a key, a state highway administration 25 year pin, a modern bullet, and a crotal bell from the old farm that the campus is built on.
Hunt number 4 was on campus again with 135 coins with a face value of $7.41, a class of 14 key fob, a key, a brass double snap hook, part of an earring, a 1979 Canadian quarter, a silver whatsit and a universal studios souvenir.
The silver whatsit has a simicircle with 3 rods that were soldered onto it. The rods came loose and I am puzzled as to what kind of jewelry this really is. Something is probably missing, but I searched the hole carefully and this is all that was there. I might have fallen off of a pendant or earring.
Today I went to the old high school. I was going to detect on one of the ball fields, but they have chained the gates closed. They posted no pets signs because a lot of people were walking their dogs and NOT cleaning up after them. Even with the sign up people still took their dogs onto the field so that may be why they chained all the gates closed. People not following the rules makes things harder on the rest of us.
I decided to try detecting around the front sidewalk and around the shrubs in front of the building. I gat luck and found 128 coins with a face value of $6.26, a couple more screw-in cleats, half a mizpah coin pendant, a damaged sword pendant, 3 wheaties (1930, 1939, 1948), a 1931 mercury dime, an undersized penny and a folded over penny.
The mercury dime was the star of the show. It was about 7 inches down and registered as a faint high tone. The undersized penny looks like someone shaved copper off trying to make it dime sized. It’s possible someone was trying to get their sodas out of the vending machine for a penny instead of the dime it should have cost back then (1963).
The CZ 21 and I found a lot of gas money, some silver, a couple of old artifacts and a BIG knife. I got lots of fresh air and exercise. Only a few more days until the end of my detecting year (May 1 to April 30). Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
