Appears to be a civil war insignia worn on your hat. Infantry or Calvary, I don't know. But on this page, the tiny bugle has similar lines encircling the body.

yes thats very possible, it is hollow like a real instrument,
the dirt is falling off now and a shinny, non eroded surface is showing, fingers grossed may be a good metal, not sure how to test it

Looks a little more detailed than the later cracker jack toys I recall, which were made of pot metal and later on plastic. If it was gold plated I would think you'd see a bit of the plating lost from the base metal being exposed to the chemical elements in the soil. I'd also expect some discoloration if it was brass. Take it to a pawn shop, so they can test it to see if it's gold. It's a curious looking item imo.

yes, you nailed it, as far as condition, I will take your advice, it has me curious enough to take it to test it

I would clean it with a soft bristled toothbrush and see if any makers marked are on it.

Maybe soak it in a little water with dishsoap for 15 min. first?

I don't think it is a hat badge or pin as it has a front and back detail. A trinket or charm perhaps.

Cracker Jack did have little horn and bugle toys prizes. I don't see that specific one. If you google "hunting horn charm" there are lots.
