"8 miles SW of Walla Walla..." would place it somewhere between Lowden, WA and the Whitman Mission National Historic Site.

The article indicates it was near the Walla Walla River which flows generally E-W; I haven't looked into it yet, but directions tended to be more anecdotal and without the precision of our modern day mapping tools and literal nature.

My guess would be there was a road or trail near the River and the directions are based off the perceived path this road took, or navigated by the River as was probably done travelling to the confluence with the Columbia River. The only other water near this would be modern-ish ditches and irrigation canals constructed in later years.
