Silver halves

Sorry guys I wasn't paying attention to the area I know it's in the forum

They would have less value than a coin from 1964 because it's considered clad silver coins from 1964 and before are 99.9 % silver after 1964 its clad...

I thought 64 and older were 90% silver and 65-70 were 40% silver.

no, 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver in the clad.

Yes, that is why it's worth more than a junk clad half.

The only .999 fine US coins I am aware of are modern bullion coins. Maybe some of the modern commemoratives also, I don't think so, but I don't pay any attention to them. Dimes, quarters and halves prior to 1965 are .900, but half dollars minted between 1965-70 are 40% silver. Currently, 90% halves melt at $6.23 and 40% halves melt at $2.55, that's based on $17.23 Troy Spot. Nice little quick reference on melt prices here: Current Melt Value Of Coins - How Much Is Your Coin Worth? shows melt on clad prices, and further down the page, shows the melt on silver.
