Spent the afternoon today hunting two elementary schools. One opened in 1923 and the other in 1940. So 2.5 years into this hobby I finally found a Merc ('44D).

The funny thing is, it was right on top of the ground! I spotted it before I swung my coil over it. Found a few wheats including a 1911 (no mint mark), a 1951 with a hole in it and a lawnmower version.

About $5.00 in clad as well. Perfect weather for hunting, cloudy and about 55F.

Best-
Kevin

Congrats on the Merc and clad !! I am from NE Texas and lived there most of my life. I found my best finds in that area.

Cloudy and 55!?! We've got yet another Nor'easter bearing down on us tomorrow- C'mon spring! BTW- nice finds!!

Merc's are one of the best looking coins ever minted - congrats on your first ! :occasion14:

As most would agree ... no matter how many more you dig in the future - it always remains a thrill !

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Congrats! I've been detecting for about 2 years and have only found one merc (1918) and a bunch of wheats, as far as old coins. We just don't have the historic populations like back east, so it's a real thrill to find even one!

Congrats on your finds, that is a good haul.

I know what you mean. I'm happy for the folks that find cool colonial and foreign stuff in the older eastern states but I know I won't be digging anything like that at a Texas school or park.:icon_biggrin:
