October 15th, the Year of Our Lord 2008.. Dear Diary: Well it's Day three of this latest vacation and the weather was gorgeous! I was a bum this morning though, wasting a good part of the day just by sleeping in late. Ah it was fantastic though! I highly recommend it to anyone trying to unwind or relax while on holiday or on a vacation. The extra sleep really does wonders for the nerves. What it doesn't do, however, is allow much time for earnest application of oneself to the pursuit of a time consuming hobby. Still though, the sleep did me good and I still got out and indulged in my hobby some, albeit a little later in the day. For the life of me though I get this feeling that there is someone looking over my shoulder.. or LOTS of someones! Oh.. never mind it's just the gang from TreasureNet.com reading these words as I type them. Silly me!

Hi Everyone! <laughing> Yeah. I got out and did a little detecting again today. I ended up going back to one of my favorite sites to hunt, the big soccer complex in the nearby town of Versailles Kentucky. It seems that I always find lots of stuff at this park, lots of trash (buried) like can slaw, pull tabs etc, the occasional ring or bling, and LOTS of clad! Lord! I'm beginning to think that these kids (and young adults) run around playing soccer with pockets FULL of coins. Not that I'm complaining mind you! Oh no! I quite enjoy finding those lost coins and goodies. Not only is it a blast to actually find them, well, the coin goes a long way towards funding for batteries, gas to get me to and from metal detecting outings, and even snacks sometimes. Ok Ok Ok.. actually, as most of you have read in these little novels I write about my adventures in metal detecting, I put all that found coin into a vacation fund for my wife and I. The bank just LOVES to see me coming with a bag full of coins, even if it's already rolled up. I have to get waved through the new "air lock" door they installed at my local branch after the third hold up in three years. You might have seen them at other banks, I've not, you enter the outer door and go through a metal detector (there's irony for you), if a large amount of metal is detected (how large??) the inner door is locked and remains locked until someone inside the bank sees you and decides it's not a gun or a knife or something like that. Sheesh! What a world we live in today huh? <shaking head sadly> Anyway. My branch bank still cashes in my found coins for "folding money" that's a little easier to deal with when you go to spend it. And it spends all too easily.
Well as my diary entry mentioned I got out and detected a little today. Well, actually I detected quite a spell, not all day or anything, but for several hours. I didn't actually cover that much ground today though, just one sideline and about half of one full sized soccer pitch..er.. field. It was rather warm today, for October! It felt more like June or even July, but there was a nice breeze blowing and it really didn't seem that hot while I was wrapped up in my detecting. There I was, head encased in my headphones, gloves on, knee pads on (still wearing short pants yet), with glazed eyes , swinging my detector back and forth like some sort of zombiefied metronome. Back and forth.. back and forth.. step..swing..step.. swing.. step.. swing.
Only it was more like.. step.. swing..STOP.. kneel.. dig.. stand up.. swing..step..STOP..DIG..swing..DIG.. Anyway, you get the idea. Lots of digging, and lots of finds. I LOVE this Park! I had to stop at one point along the edge of the park where the neighborhoods back up to the park. One old guy was doing some gardening or something and struck up a conversation with me.. he was curious I suppose. I always take time to talk to anyone that asks me what I'm doing and how it's going. This guy did have a little bit of information for me about the park. He told me that there was a plan in the making to put in lights at this park so that there could be night games played here as well. He wasn't real thrilled about the prospect seeing as his house and backyard backed right up to the park.. could be a nuisance I suppose, cheering crowds (parents) whistle blowing, etc etc all the while you are trying to sleep?? Oh well. Guess it has to get passed by the local government and zoning commission or whatever first.
Back to detecting though. That older gentleman was kindly enough to relieve me of a load of can slaw and dug up cans before I went back to hunting. I found more though.. <smirk> But, I also found other things. Coins of course.. a LOT of coins... my total for today was a little more than Monday's but I'm not complaining about that either!..Check it out!

$11.28 in change. That more than paid for my gas both to and from the hunt today.. about six times over! WOOHOO! <grin> But of course can slaw and coins weren't the only things I found today or it would be a really boring post wouldn't it? First off let's look at this Whatzit I found. It's Brass or some alloy of brass with a screw going through some piece of wood into a knurled cap with a ring in it. I'm thinking it's some sort of plug or something but for the life of me I can't think of what it might be. I water tight match case? (plug) or the plug to some old antique metal cooler perhaps? Anyone out there have an idea? Let me know. The wood by the way is not cork as far as I can tell, but it is rather soft or spongy to the touch.. what remains of it anyway. Have a look.

10-15-08 025whatzit.webp

Some more modern finds (if that whatzit is an antique) would include this aerosol cartridge.. CO2 maybe? Butane? <shrug> And a discarded battery..

10-15-08 024CO2.webp

I found a couple of zipper pulls.. one Nike (the swoosh) and one Adidas brand. Then there was this big chunk of something? A Key Fob perhaps.. with "Class of '00" on it. It blasted my headphones like a big fifty cent piece ON THE SURFACE.. but it was actually a couple of inches underground. <shrug> It's not silver or even copper for that matter.. don't know what it's made of to be honest. It's ugly.

10-15-08 028class.webp

Not far from the big ugly "fob" I got another BIG target. This time it turned out to be a BIG piece of lead. As in 2 Ounce Egg Sinker. Oh and a "few Good Men" <grin> Boy! Those Marines just seem to turn up in the oddest places!

10-15-08 027egg.webp

I found some more soccer related Bling today too. A couple of pins, that have obviously lost their "pins" or posts from their backs.. otherwise they wouldn't have been in the dirt I should think.

10-15-08 026pins.webp

The "Mead Cup" pin is the second one I've found for that particular tournament. I found the other one at this same park.. go figure.. the Chevy Cup, while older by what? Six years? .. is a new one, for me anyway. Just another addition to my growing collection of soccer pins and coins. Cool!
Not far from the "Chevy Cup" pin I ran into an old friend! CHUCK! Gotta Love that Mouse!

10-15-08 029chucky.webp

I was having a good day indeed! That Chuck E Cheese token makes number ten for my collection. That mouse sure gets around! I've found him (the token anyway) all over this state, or at least in several counties of Central Kentucky hereabouts. <grin>
The afternoon was turning into early evening as I made my way towards my truck and then towards home. Vacation or not, I still had to cook dinner tonight, and my stomach was making it all too clear that dinner time was fast approaching. As usual though I was swinging my detector all the way, and a good thing too! About halfway across the adjacent field to the one I was hunting today, I got a hit. My trusty Prizm IV was telling me that it was a dime (signal) about 2 inches down. Cool.. more coin for the vacation fund.. only it wasn't a coin. I cut my plug, flipped it over to reveal this little head looking back at me. Yes.. "head" or at least the silhouette of a head. It looked like a charm I was thinking, and it was engraved. On one side it had a name "ASHTON" on the reverse it had a date.. "7-20-00" ? Was it a birthdate? Perhaps that was a graduation date..like the key fob ? <smile> I'm sure the date was important for some reason or another, either for or about this Ashton person. It wasn't until I got home and cleaned it up a bit that I discovered that Ashton's silhouette was SILVER!!!! There stamped at the bottom of the dated side was the little "925" stamp for silver. COOL!

Everyone likes a little head.. <blushing> Ok.. I'm sure that didn't sound right!.. anyway.. the like it even more when it's SILVER! Just Icing on the cake! yes, today was a good day! And better still... I'm STILL on vacation tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and Sunday! <doing the chicken dance in front of the computer now> <giggling like a loon>

Oh I didn't mention the pair of shades I found today..

10-15-08 023stuff.webp

...cheap sunglasses, but still cool. I might wear them tomorrow as I sit on the patio in the lounge chair sipping a nice tall cool drink.. pretending I'm at the beach somewhere. <grin> And then when I wake up.. I might go do some more detecting! I hope you all get out and get to indulge a bit soon. As always..

Happy Hunting!

Some very flash treasure finds there Frodov

Your Whatzit is definitely an expandable plug - and extra cool in wood. I have only seen modern types and they have all been the drain plug in a small boat.

Thanks Mike.. I had thought of that too.. but it seemed awfully small (diameter) for a boat plug. I'm still thinking it's for some sort of antique cooler or something along those lines. Thanks for the input though!

The "lead egg" was used as a weight or something like that. It had a string attached to it at one time....or so I was told. I found a similar object a while back and had no idea what it was until somebody finally identified it for me. I just can't remember exactly what it was....but it weighs a TON

If the 'egg' has a hole through it, it will be a fishing sinker. It sure looks like one.
kevo mate, you might be thinking of a 'plumb bob' ?

Another cool post. Great post. That may be a homemade plug for the end of a coal
oil can. There was a screw on cap, but were easy to loose. my 2 cents.

The CO2 Cartridge is either from an inhaler(I have asthma) or one of those airwick thingies. Sweet finds though, Congrats on the silver!!!!

Congrats on all those finds, Fro! Enjoy that vacation!

Hi Frodov,

Nice finds! I think that your whats-it might be a bird call...you hold the stem end and twist the wooden part back and forth to make it "chirp".

Great finds, and the whatzits sure looks like a bird caller to me as well.

A bird caller? <puzzled expression> I'm familiar with all sorts of "turkey callers" but I don't think this is anything like any of those. The wood is a soft variety, balsam or maybe even cork, but it's way too soft to make the kind of vibrations that one would need out of a caller. I'm still leaning towards this thing being some sort of plug I think. Of course, I may never know for certain what it is. Just one of the prices you pay for digging up mysteries while metal detecting I guess. <grin> Thanks for the input though Mountainplayer! and thanks for reading.

Terrific story - really enjoyed it. thanks for posting. You are lucky to be finding so much - good way to know if the detector is working.

Not saying that's what it is, but here's an example of what Mountainplayer and Downeysc are describing. Better known as an Audubon bird call.

Another good day at the field. Don't you wish you could have a vacation every other week? :icon_thumright:

Thanks PBK.. I guess they do make callers like that. <grin> I still don't think the one I found is quite the same though.. I think my whatzit is more along the lines of an expandable plug. I could be wrong though. Thanks for the info and the input.

I like that.. a "silver streak" <grin> No, I don't think anyone has to worry about my catching up to their silver finds by any stretch of the imagination. I'm happy with what I'm finding of course, but I'm sure there are lots more little trinkets and hopefully even some real silver coins out there in my future. I'll take'em as I find'em though. Thanks for the encouragement all the same. <smile>

Happy Hunting!
