I found this today at a Colorado site which should date to about 1900. It is very ornate and says sterling on both sides. At first I thought it was the handle to a piece of silverware, but it is hollow and very light weight, so I don't think so. Anyone know?

I found one of those yesterday, and thanks to these posts, I know what it is. Wish mine were silver, though! It is aluminum,I think, and ornate like the photos above.

Your handle seems to be flat in the back and the ones posted by Gypsy and PBK are round.
Maybe some thing else.

Best,

Many buttonhooks have flat, or fairly flat handles, similar to those of table knives. For example...
