Silver trade dollars & 1 dollar silver round Indian head

A co-worker,gave me some silver trade dollars, and a 1 dollar siilver round Indian head coin,to sell for him.
The trade dollars are dated like in the 1792 range. I need to know the right place to obtain appraisals, for auctions. I realize their might be variations in the same dates, that are more valuble than others. Any help is appreciated. We are not, collectors and not looking for top dollar, just fair prices, and fast turn around cash.
I feel they should be graded ,before selling.

Trade dollars weren't made in the 1700's. See this page. http://coins.ha.com/info/typevalues.php

Don't think they made dollar coins in 1792. If it's real it could be a spanish dollar coin. They were used as legal tender while the mint got up and running.

Trade dollars started in 1873; I believe the first dollars (US) were minted in 1794. Bottom line: It would be nice to see pics of the coins so that we might better serve your needs.

A lot of coin dogs on this site. Put up some pics and we will help you with fair prices. The indian head is probably just worth silver. Lets see them!

I travelled to Jakarta Indonesia in December and these coins are all over the place. A person with limited knowledge of coins could get taken for quite a bit of money. A hint... Trade dollars were not issued until 1873. I saw trade dollar examples with 1792, 1872 S, Seated dollars in the 1840s and 1850s with CC mint marks, 1795 flowing dollar with reeded edges, Colonial Spanish silver with reeded edges. All looked silver, but I am willing to bet that they have little or no silver content. I was able to negotiate a price of $5 each for anything that I wanted.

Each of the examples above have clues to their lack of authenticity. Either the date range is incorrect, a mintmark was used 30 years before is officially opened, or the edges of the coin are incorrect. Colonial 8reale coins of mexico have an unmistakable edge pattern, and it is never reeded.

Be warned, as these examples look real, but small details like the ones mentioned above give them away.

All coins were magnetic and real EL-FAKKOOS, and returned to source.

Re: Silver trade dollars & 1 dollar silver round Indian head

This kind of crap really ticks me off. The government should be out in force looking for the jerks making these fake coins and the idiots bringing them in to the US to sell.

Re: Silver trade dollars & 1 dollar silver round Indian head

Be warned that they are getting better at it all the time and the fakes are no longer easy to distinguish by even well rounded collectors. It used to be as simple as mentioned above where ALL the fake so and so's had this thing wrong with them and all the fake 1795 whatevers had this wrong with them but no longer... there are now quite a large number of dies for many of the coins and some of them are dangerously accurate. Many of the best fakes are also being made with real silver so buyer beware. I would not buy any coins from over seas period.
