Hello,
This past weekend i was given permission to hunt an early 1800's farm house. After about an hour I found
3-Merc dimes 1916,1917 and 1930
1-1961 dime Roosevelt?
1-1945 P war nickel
and a large sterling bracelet.
Thanks for looking and HH
Don
The W is actually a monogram (of an A and W) of the designer of the coin, Adolph Weinman.
The mint mark will be located on the bottom of the reverse to the left of the fasces.
Now, look there on that 1916 you found. Could there be a D there? Fingers crossed for ya.
edit to add: Here is a photo of a 1916-D copy. You will see the location of the mint mark for these coins. Yours could have no mark which mean it was from Philadelphia, a D for Denver or an S for San Franciso.
The "D", or Denver, mint mark is the key to the series and worth quite a pile of pretty pennies. It usually starts around five hundred dollars in the lowest grades.
