i have seen some silver plated knives,forks and such at thrift stores for 30 cents each,
would these be worth buying for scrap silver?some said 12dwt or 18 dwt on them.
any info would be appreciated.

A value-determining test is the thickness of the silver plating. The bargain piece will be coated with 1 to 3 microns of silver plating. After polishing one of these a few times, the silver plating will wear right off. If the piece has been coated with 8 to 10 microns, it is pretty good. Twenty-five microns is about as thick as they come.

The above was a quote from a website. Not my own information. I work with fiber optic acable of 62.5 microns. This is smaller than a hair from the average human. A human hair can range in diameter from 17 microns to about 180 microns.

No. The silver plated dinnerware is not work the scrap value of the silver to purchase price ratio.
