RUTHERFORD - CHRISTOPHER BECHTER ran the BECHTER MINT (operated from 1831-1849). In 1840 he disappeared under mysterious circumstances on a trip to BUNCOMBE COUNTY. Somebody ran the mint an additional nine years. BECHTER was last seen talking to the toll operator at the PERRIS GAP TOLL STATION near the HENDERSON COUNTY line. source PAGE 25, TREASURE, JULY 1988
SHACKLEFORD BANK ... a Confederate ship with a silver payroll was driven aground here by Union warships. The crew buried the cache between the wreck and BOGUE SOUND shore near the village of SALTER PATH.
