Smoking pipe or early bubble toy

I found this yesterday at an old homesite. brass? Bronze? Heavy for its size. The cap piece is some type of early plastic I think. The main design is not exactly the same on each side. Early bubble toy maybe? Any info?

It certainly looks like a pipe, but pipes aren't made of metal because they would get way too hot. What is the black insert made of? Is it plastic?

Very cool looking. Are there any visible burn spots in the bowl?

The bowl part seems to be some type of Plastic. I read that some early plastics were resistant to high temperatures. There doesn't appear to be any burn marks just a couple chips.

Its a real pipe and if its metal it might be a messing pipe if memory serves me correctly.

Thanks. I've tried to figure out what a messing pipe is with no luck. Tobacco? Opium? Kool aid?

Tobacco pipe, made out of copper and zinc. Here's one in a completed ebay listing:

The "early Plastic" could be either Gutta Percha (made with latex from tropical trees native to Asia/Oceania) or bakelite, but I think it's probably Gutta Percha. Very resistant to heat.
