Snake Buckle

Hi all,

Here is my latest find from this past weekend. I know some date to the CW and earlier, while others can date up to WWII. Looking for any information on dating this piece.

Welcome. That's a pretty snake. The one Civil War one I found had a loop that was manufactured differently. Mine had the loop on TOP of the longer belt loop, not cast or welded to it.

Can't help with date, but that is a great find in good condition. Maybe you will find some more from that site that might help you date it. Welcome to the forum. Look forward to your post.

Cant help you on the date as I too found one and only recently found out it was a buckle. It came from a field loaded with late 19th century history. Nice find though

welcome, those 2 headed snake buckles are so cool
going from memory i think it is a, two-piece British Enfield
and used during the cw, if im wrong someone will come

Thanks for the replies all. I know they're difficult to date but obviously hopeful it's period lol.

Tough one & even tougher over here, as they start in the 16th C! Go out of fashion in the 17th C, back in the late 18th & used until the end of the 20th C. I've seen no books that date all the variants by type.
I think yours looks post 1900 though with that attachment type.

It's tough to tell in the pic but the attachment does in fact straddle the belt loop rather than attach to the front. I've read that makes it an earlier variety but not certain.

OK, see what your saying. I think the WWI type that I'm thinking of which still uses the same style of head (which in fact looks more bird like than snake), doesn't straddle. Although this is the first time I've heard that. Any references?
