Could be part of a vinaigrette or early container for when a lady had the vapors. Its the right shape and size.

Late 1800's, very early 1900's at the latest. Most popular during the period of the middle to late 1800's and during Civil War period. Normally had a small screen or ornamental cover between the stinky stuff and the open case.

It's not deap enough for a snuff box, if it where of a more recent date I would guess that it was a business card holder.

BTW, I was born in Detroit, Michigan. Plenty of old stagecoach stops heading out Grand River Avenue towards Farmington.
