Howdy All-

Had the day off yesterday, so I went to the local high school by my house that was built in 1952 and has a huge field in the back.

Decided I would do some swinging until too many people showed up and then I would head somewhere else.

Yesterday I found the following with my X-Terra 305:

1937 Penny (Wheaty) - My first ever!! But it is hammered.
1963 Penny
1967 Penny
1962 Nickel
1965 Dime
1965 Quarter

So I am thinking there has to be some silver in that field, and am wondering is it the 305 that is giving me the issue? I am really considering pickup up an AT PRO
and selling this unit, Unless someone with a 305 out there has some tuning tips for me to better my odds of finding silver :)

I am going to go back this Saturday early in the morning before the household gets up, I should have about 3 hours to swing. Yesterday after 6 hours I only made it around the perimeter of the field, that is how big it is!

Keep swinging and digging.. You will score sooner or later.. HH

its not just about the machine, its also all about the person swinging it and where youre swinging it, silver will come eventually, just go low and slow. and a 1952 highschool sounds like as good a place as any so keep at it

I'd like to know how everyone is gaining access to school's. All the schools in my area are fenced in. Did you get permission to hunt at the school? Awesome finds by the way lol.

It may not be your machine, there is just a chance that the silver isn't there.

Schools by me have openings in the fence to walk through and no signs that say keep out. No need to ask for permission because it's not specifically banned and it's public property.

Don't be so hasty to fire your metal detector , you have just located pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters with it . If your coil
was over silver , do you have reason to believe that it would ignore it ?

The Minelab is an excellent machine--keep working with it and the silver will come. Go a bit slower with the Minelab and listen for the deeper signals--the older coins are generally deeper, but not always. Sounds like you just need to dig more coins at this field--the law of averages says that you will find silver coins in the mix with the other dates you are pulling. Good luck!

Gaspars-

The schools that I detect at, like already said have open fences, public tennis courts, etc. and don't have any signs that say keep out or private property.

I usually get to the school at 5:30am to 6am before all of the dog people and other people show up to use the field and I am usually our by 8am and off to a park or something after that.

Thanks Erik, I will definitely keep at it, I must admit sometimes I get a hit and I dig down 6 to 8 inches and can't find the object and am afraid to dig any deeper for fear of someone walking up and saying that I am destroying the field. It's like I try to dig quick, get the object and cover up the whole and then move on to the next target. Maybe I am going about it to quickly and need to slow down a bit.

As has been said, you probably just haven't gotten the coil over one yet. I would try to find a friend or relative who would let you detect their lawn. Find one old enough for good potential and had not been detected before. THEN, knowing the odds are in your favor, go at it hard and pay attention to how every signal sounds.

If that doesn't work, buy a silver quarter and bury it to relieve any worry about your machine ignoring silver. Try different depths and listen hard!

Hope that helps.

Yes the Minelab's cycle through many frequencies so you do need to slow down a bit, but they get better depth too. It takes a bit of time to master the pinpointing with the DD coil. If you don't have the SunRay probe for your machine (I assume they make one for the Xterra) you need to get this accessory as it will make your recovery of targets much faster. The other option is the UniProbe which is built into a set of headphones. I have the X-1 on my Minelab SE Pro and cannot hunt without it. Supplement this probe with a VibraProbe or Garrett ProPointer etc, for ultra-fine pinpointing--when you can't locate the item in a pile of dirt...dirty objects in dirt can be difficult to spot some times, especially when they are small. I need to almost touch the item with my VibraProbe for it to go off, so it works great as a secondary pinpointer when I need it.

Don't worry about digging too much as long as you dig a neat flap and fill your holes well. You can always place your dirt on a towel to keep things neater and to impress anyone that might happen by. Done right it should be hard to tell that you've been there. Fan your digger over the plug to scatter any remaining dirt and "fluff" up the grass.

Listen for the deeper cent, dime, and quarter signals (5" or more) as you slow your swing down a bit and you will certainly starting finding good stuff!

Two things I find typical where schools are locked up. 1) it's a Ghetto and a high crime area, 2)It's an expensive uptight neighborhood with extremely finely manicured grass.

I have a ghetto school that is in lock down directly across the street from my office. I never hunted it because I like to hunt early mornings, and late nights. Root kill'er Rob went over just after school let out and found a 1912 Barber dime.:BangHead:

Another school, my wife and I hunted just the dirt parking lot. We were approached and warned not to dig on any grass at the school and they weren't to happy about us digging in a dirt parking lot, but let us if we promised to cover our wholes.

You should determine if either of these apply to the schools in your area. Use discretion and be neat when you hunt.

Good luck and good hunting.

Been a while since I posted on here, we were on vacation for a week, last hurrah before school starts for the kids.

Anyways on my quest to find silver, I went back to that High School again 2 weeks ago and although I did not find any silver coins, I did find a silver cladda ring marked 925 and a 10k gold ring with a amethyst and a small diamond!!!
