I spent the afternoon north of Birmingham, AL at the wife's grandmother's property. I decided to do a little detecting around her yard. They have owned the property since the late 40's. My first hit was this beauty about 4 inces down. I saw the wheat and droped it in my pocket thinking it was from sometime in the 40's since it was close to the original 40's section of the house. I spent another 45 min and went inside. I cleaned up the penny and showed it to Grandma. Looking at it closer to see the date, I saw the 1909 and let out a, "Oh S**t!". After realizing I just yelled that to a 89 yr old Baptist preacher's daughter, I composed myself and checked for the mint mark......none, checked for the VDB.....nothing! After a small exhale, I still was excited to have a 115 yr old penny in my hand. Fun day!
Also found a small coin spill in the yard. 2 quarters, 2 dimes and a penny all dated in the 60's.
