So much for "free education" What does it cost!

it costs 13K a year to educate a kid (leaving out the variables) and 30K a year to warehouse one in the prison system. It seems we always have enough money to build another prison but those schools, not so much.

We also have the most people in prisons in the world, I wonder if the prison industrial complex has something to do with that? Did you know that inmates can work on defense related projects that require top secret clearances but can't get a job with the defense industry upon release due to having a criminal record?

I asked someone who worked in the prison system about just that, and he replied that the reason was, that they (inmates) were totally supervised through their entire work day whereas in the "real world", people are not watched closely. I don't agree with it, that's just what I was told.

Most Prison systems are PRIVATELY owned.

Worldtalker, I have no problem with the prison system being privately held...

Well, that is so long as they don't misspell license plates :p

the problem with privately owned prisons is that prisons are to be for punishment, not for making money off the inmates. When the private prison owners are using inmate labor, they are taking jobs away from the general population.

Education is still cheaper than incarceration.
