So what's up with Centralia, Pa. ?

I was looking at ghost town info and Centralia's name popped up.

I google earthed it and looked at numerous photos...wow...it has changed to almost nothing except a few die hards.

Has anyone ever thought about detecting there? Would it even be safe with the fumes, ground shifiting, etc.? Is it even allowed?
Is any places there old enough to risk it?

Been there Done that.
Will do it again.

Found a Few nice Coins Etc. But it's a Hard place to Detect.
Everything was Bull Dozed & all Water lines etc.
are still under all the Trash & Metal.

Best spots are Under Old Large Trees & best time Early Spring.

Township Police Patrol Regularly,
The One I talked to was more intrested in Arresting
off Roaders who Trespass in the Woods Surrounding it,
Then worrying about Detectorists.
Very Nice People.

Although It is Considered a Ghost Town
My opinion it is a Ghost City by the Size.
Probably about 7 homes left tops.

I've been googleing Centralia... fascinating!

Re: So what's up with Centralia, Pa. ?

it's been some time since I've been there. I use to pass thru on the way to the hunting camp. I quit that camp several years ago and haven't traveled that way more than once since then. Always wondered how the detecting would be. Maybe if I buy a horse for traveling rather than be gouged by gas prices I might get up that way again...

Off the topic of metal detecting, this is for those of you who like Fossils.
St Clair has been noted for it's Fern Fossils and claims to be the only place in the world to find the famous white fern fossils....WRONG.
You can also find these and numerous other fossils in Centralia. There are literally THOUSANDS for the taking.
My son and I (he's 10) have gotten literally hundreds of pounds of fossils from the site, we have sold a lot of them on EBay. Some of the plant fossils are the best I have ever seen. Literally hundreds of different fossils were in one that I sold on EBay. This "rock" was just packed with different types of plant/fern fossils. $35 dollars for a little rock that took no time to find.
One of my best finds there was a 16 inch wide piece of flat shale with a complete fern leaf covering the entire piece- until our daughter (she was 2 at the time) stepped on it when I had it laying on our porch :'(

People that are too busy running around should look to the ground, you might be surprised on what you could have found!

Anyone interested in a weekday trip? With the housing industry swirling in the bowl, I have some time on my hands and I am quite bored..

sad to say, yes I'd be interested but not until May and even then some days are closed. We are in the process of emptying a house etc. because of a death in the family.
