Excellent job - I started doing that too. Going to flea markets and garage sales and looking for gold and silver items to resell. It's not nearly as easy as it used to be 10+ years ago, but if you have the time and inclination to do it you can make enough to buy a new metal detector or maybe even go on a vacation.

Nice work

i find lots of silver......people dont buy it like they do the gold.....have to get out early to find gold but silver will be there any time of the day....I've gotten to where i pass a lot of silver up.....not as much resale value.......save the money for other items for ebay or flea market

Great time to sell! With gold at $743 an ounce, it's the highest since 1980. Being a full-time old book and antique dealer, I also buy gold and sterling silver (mostly at estate sales), and I am still amazed that people sell it for pennies on the dollar. They just don't think to look the piece over and see if it's marked 14K.

Not as much resale value? Sterling (or 800 silver) obviously is heavier, and the weight adds up quick. My scraper here on Long Island, is also a refiner and is paying about $11.65 per ounce for sterling, at todays price of around $13.70 an ounce. Two weeks ago my business partner and I bought a bunch of sterling flatware at an estate sale for $1800, and promply scraped it within the hour for $3300.

not everyone has that kind of money to shell at one time.....i work 40+ hours a week, sell at flea market, and sell on ebay and barely make ends meet............what i was talking about was the pieces of 925 or sterling jewelry i can pick up here and there at yard sales......I have no way of coming up with an insane amount of cash like $1800 to put into a gamble

Yah, I don't have that kind of $ to do that either - however scrap .925 silver still sells on Ebay and if you can afford to do it, I'd still pick it up if you can get it for pennies on the dollar.

I've noticed a few people lately auctioning off the gold AND silver together as scrap - that might be a way to do it as well.

Either way you did well :)

I wasn't trying to minimize your great eye, effort and profit by picking off that gold at yards sales. Certainly a nice piece of cash for part time yard sailing. But keep your eyes open for silver. Even those weighted sterling candlesticks (they are marked on the bottom "weighted sterling" are being sold cheap like $5.00 (or less) for a pair. When you strip away the silver (it comes off easy with a hammer and needlenose pliers, you can get between $25.00 and $40.00 (or more) in scrap.
