Two bittersweet finds. I was detecting in Colville park in Red Wing MN, about to dig another deep dime signal when I heard "HEY". I looked up to see a policeman standing there. He politely told me that Red Wing no longer allowed digging in the parks. Same old story....some detectorist(s) were careless and left unfilled holes and mounds of dirt, not bothering to make a clean recovery. In addition to the two dimes, I found 1917, 1918 D and 1930 wheat cents. I'll always wonder what was in that last hole I couldn't dig! Damn! I wish people would be courteous. I'm tired of being penalized because of the actions of the 1%'ers.

Go back with your Pin Pointer and Small Shovel. Yes it's hard to go into the desirable places. We are smack dab in the Middle of the Civil War area and most of it is protected and the areas that aren't are overgrown too much.

The people pay taxes for these parks Ive researched all the laws around this many times the police will tell you to leave but not because its illegal but because someone complained those people whos pets poop and pee all over the park and kill more grass than we do..I see why they will tell you that because of these people who don't care or don't even know how to dig a plug.I ll bet that no one made a law or ordinance for no detecting, I'm glad I don't see people detecting by where I am accept one park that I saw posts on this site about Burns park in Ann Arbor I don't go there because of all the people that were upset by some detectorists who tore up the place. Soory to hear about that I would check into it a little more..

Just so it's clear, it wasn't MY digging that was responsible for the 'eviction'. I told the policeman that I'd already recovered some targets and pointed to where they were dug, emphasizing that you could not see where I recovered them.

Congrats on your finds and sorry about the fall out from the actions of others

Maybe the Park Administration should be more aware that once a Plug and hole is dug and put back properly that other animals can reopen them smelling the fresh dig . I've also had kids watch me and then follow me reopening the plugs I dug thinking I missed something . Permits for detecting should be considered so those areas damaged can be properly refilled and seeded . I get upset when I see holes and damage because I know what's next .
Now here in Wisconsin detecting in or on any water area meaning Lakes , rivers , creeks , beaches and watershead areas is prohibited due to one drowned fool who stepped into a dropoff and the family pushed until they suceeded . So every year people drown in Wisconsin but they don't ban swimming or boating but metal detecting is off limits ... crazy . Woodstock

Knipper, I feel your pain..we currently have a detecting ban in place here, in our city parks..due to past carelessness, but I have been working with our (new) Parks and Rec Superintendent on getting the ban lifted and possibly instituting a required permit to detect, and kudos to Kevin "Againstthewind" for the much needed and helpful advice. So this weekend, I hit our local high school...and even before I got off the pavement, I could see the dead, poorly made plugs from a previous detectorist. Grrrrr....I scan the plugs...beep beep beep...yep...trash still in there...DOUBLE GRRrrrr! So I left to detect elsewhere, I didn't want to be connected to someone else's ignorance. But on the positive side, the parks ban has forced me to permission hunt the old farms and farm houses near me, producing good finds...Hang in there! Ddf...

Welp, without rewriting the story, as I tend to do every time this comes up, I'll just hit the highlights.

1.) Use of long handled diggers in parks causes complaints. All they see is a "shovel"
2.) Golf clubs do more damage and every spiked shoe can do as much damage as a slightly less than kosher plug.
3.) If the mentality is applied everywhere, than after the first person rolls thru a stop sign, ALL driving must cease!
4.) Allowing them to deny us our pursuit of happiness because of some rule breaker is NOT the democratic way. We are GUILTY by association! Not proven so.
5.) This hobby had better organize it's response to this type of stuff, or......well...you know.

By the by, did you ask the officer what machine he's swinging on his off hours in his own personal park?
