Some help to identify this purty plz!

Found this while metal detecting today here at a park in central south carolina. These pictures are after cleaning it with hot soapy water and a light scrub with a firm plastic bristled brush. I am positive this is lead and im also pretty sure its a projectile of some sort just not sure what type. Any help given or thoughts are much appreciated. Also today was my very first time metal detecting and this so happened to be my first find ...plz dont tell me if its a shotgun slug haha!

Also it is about 5/8" wide and 1/2" tall weighing approx 26.6 grams.

It looks more like a cap to something. Certainly not a projectile though. But hopefully you have now caught the metal detecting bug and will find many cool things in the future!

Omg...."bluveinthrobber"....CATCHY avatar...lol...teehee. your mystery piece does appear to be a cap, probably to cap the end of a pipe off for safety purposes. Welcome to the forums, welcome to metal detecting...looks like you've caught the bug! No hope for you lol...Ddf

My wife thought it may be a cap also. After cleaning it a tad more i can confirm it is a projectile for a fact. In this picture you can actually see the rifling on it much butter. Which would explain the divit in the top kinda like a hollow point and the hollowish inverted bottom side

Which also leads me to believe its an old shotgun slug :/

Sabot is what it's called.

First pics did not show the lines on the side. It's for deer hunting, modern shotgun ammo.

Thanks for the welcoming. I got a buttload of new hobbies im trying to get into. Including prospectong gold and gems on top of metal detecting. I was gofted a brandnew never used delta4000 so i figured what the heck lets give metal detecting a go. Hopefully i stumble one a couple musketballs as where im at theres been a lot history.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that I'm wrong. Now that I see the rifling on the sides, it does appear to be a Foster slug. I've never seen one with such a small cavity in the back though. Interesting find.

Thanks. Ah no biggy bud. Honestly the first couple pics werent that good. I didnt notice the rifling either until i cleaned it up a bit more today. Just glad that i atleast found something to match this weird dime thats copper tone. Its a 2000 p roosevelt dime and couldnt find any info. It still weighs as much as a clad coated dime. Im thinking maybe tarnished cause i found it in about 8 inches of clay/dirt just not sure cause i cleaned the crap out of it as well but it still looks like copper.

That little dimple caught my eye but the base looked to thick. Dimple was supposed to be a hollow point!

Ya i didnt know slygs can be hollow point. Maybe its from a large bore muzzleloader. I dont know much about guns or ammunition so im kinda brain dead when it comes to that stuff.

Rifled shotgun slug. Foster style. 20 gauge by the dimensions. Federal made/makes them with the dimpled nose.
