This was found in a field, along the area of a well worn 1800s trail. Anyone have a clue what it is? We are guessing some kind of handle or latch? To the best of our knowledge there was never a residence there, but we are finding a lot of 1800s nails.

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto Ethan. :hello:
Unfortunately, it could've come from anything really.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself will chime in. :laughing7:

THANKS so much for ALL of the comments! We are totally new to this and while I suspected that we might not even come up with a good guess, it's good to hear others more experienced say the say thing. BUT after the gimlet comment, I looked more at the item and it definitely has the grooves like a gimlet would have. Why it is bent at nearly a 90degree angle, would be an incredible guess. But I do think we have at least a rough idea, which is terrific. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

Yours may have been kissed by a plow.

Yes it's been in a worked field probably for over 100 years! The groove is definitely a screw type though now that I look at it.
