nice finds Catherine1. I love to hunt ginseng. The gold leaves and red berries really stand out in the fall. Nothing better than to find those big 4 and 5 prongs.

Real nice points and even nicer "sang" roots(some of those big ones look to be 50 or more years old) ,i used to dig the hell out of some ginseng up through the local shady hollow's it can be addicting too!....looks like you got close to a pound wet there...my kinda treasure hunter!

Thanks for the replies. The big/old plants are hard to find now. Very few berries this year. You have go to some remote places to find it. I found that plate full on the mountain goat side of a hill. Your estimate on the amount was pretty good WV (14 oz.). It was about 350.00 a pound last year. I can't find a pic of the finished Ft. Ancient knife I gave to one of my kids, as you could see the similarity to the core piece. Happy hunting!

like i said b4 nice points and real nice sang the biggest ginseng root i ever found was the one and only 5 prong that ive ever found(found lots of 4 prongs though) that was the year b4 last,it had a 4 ounce root on it ,i think it will top out this year at around 450-500 thats about what it peaked out at last year in my area..happy hunting!

Those five prongs are rare. I found one, and my father also. And we have been hunting for over 35 years. I know the hills are rough in WV. I found some while working in Clarksville, WV a few years back. However I get alot more excited when I dig up artifacts! I need to do some more digging at the cave. It overlooks the Ohio river.

oh yea ,i love shelters, and yes there is no other feeling like finding/holding a thousands year old point, its like a natural adrenaline rush(high)...
