I'd thought I'd show you some of my shell-tempered pottery. It came from a single component site that was dated via a wood charcoal sample to a date of A.D.1490 plus or minus 80 years. They came from a well known site hence I have a date.( This is the only site I hunt that's been carbon-dated ).

Here are a couple of my nicer rims. Both grit tempered.

Lastly is my favorite piece of pottery I've ever found. It came from the shell tempered site. It's a tiny piece but what I love is that it features marks left by the fingernails of the pot maker. The picture is a little blurry but you can still see the imprints. How cool is that. It feels like a real personal touch or connection to the early American who crafted the pot.

Unitas...Love the pottery! I never go home empty handed now that I've started to pick it up. My brother just laughs at me, but hands over his handful at the end of the day. I'm accumulating
quite a stack.

Thanks unitas. Your Pottery Shards look almost identical to mine, both in texture and design.

Here's a few pics of some of mine.

The first pic is a nice handle piece.

The next two are a few more handle pieces.

The next 4 are some pieces I have on display in a case.

Next is a Lug Handle.

Next 2 are some decorated Rims Shards. As you can see these are shell tempered as are 95% of what we find.

Next a couple of decorated rims

Last, a huge piece I dug out of a trash pit.

I also have boxes of pieces just like yours, but I've got to the point that if it's not decorated or a nice rim pieces I don't pick it up.

Unitas... neat stuff, fourth picture has an interesting reinforced rim. The triangle punctate design is also an Iroquoian trait. It would be interesting to see what designs overlap and those that are specific to a particular culture or area.

Thanks. Pottery is extremely interesting. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to identification. There are a great many books and papers that really go into detail on typology. My hunting partner is very good at I.d.ing different types and time periods. I am still learning but definately picking things up. I find a lot of it and being able to learn from it does interest me . HH, Unitas

Dorkfish, That's some great pottery you've got there. I love the lug and strap handles. I have yet to find one but look forward to it. I always take home the pottery. I wouldn't want it to crumble back to earth but I agree sometimes when there's a lot of it I'm tempted to just pick up the rims!
