Detector(s) used
CTX 3030, TDI SL
Decided to try a new spot the other day (Monday?) and was hoping for a little silver, and fortunately a 1957 Roosevelt came to the rescue.

The day before I was throwing some quarters into a change bin and heard an odd sound. It was either silver, or a half dollar. Frantically searched through and found a 1964 quarter! Who needs a detector? First silver change find in years.

Got out Tuesday to the same spot as the silver Roosevelt, and not much to speak, but got some pewter spoon fragments, which was a surprise. they might be older. Also got some kind of pin. I can't tell what it's made out of. Didn't signal as silver, but it's an odd shape which may explain it. The back part fell off and the pin rusted away. Since it didn't ring like silver, I wasn't sure, but rubbed it and there was no flaking, etc. Got it home and cleaned it up, it has marcasite throughout. Cleaned the smaller areas and crevices and it all looks solid. Maybe it's older, but I don't understand why this piece wouldn't have a stamp on it. The back piece that fell off is definitely junk metal and was soldered on at one point. Any input?

Had some time today and hit the spot again. Started slow, but eventually found a 1937-D Merc. Decided to work that area a bit harder and soon got a deep promising signal. It was pretty deep, and out pops a clump of dirt with some silver peeping through! Always a rush pulling that dirt apart to reveal something that's been untouched for years. Turned out to be an 1892 Barber Quarter. She must've circulated for years before being dropped... looks like an AG3. Then about an inch deep an IHC came out. What?? It was super shallow. Haven't even looked at it yet. Also, a flat button was in the area... so that is a bit intriguing.

All for now, hope to get out more soon. HH all!

Nice! Thanks for sharing...

looks like a hair bow type pin

What a eclectic array of silver, that's cool. You covered a long time frame of coinage!

oh yeah! silver city!

Very nice finds. Congrats on the sweet silvers! GL&HH!

Yeah , I think the guess of hair clip is right - the curve in it suggests this , as does the "junk metal piece " that was soldered on .
it certainly does appear to be silver . As to why you don't see a hallmark on it , the piece looks rather home crafted -( rather than
company manufactured ), so this is not uncommon .

Nice site for hunting it looks like, congrats on the silver!

Looks like a barrette to me as well, the way it's bowed ,very pretty!

Great looking silver.....Congratulations!!

Thanks guys! I'll just have to break down and get a silver test kit.

I'm leaning toward it being a regular pin that's just been bent. Looking at the pin portion that fell off, it leaves very little room for hair, and looked to just contain a small "pin" rather than a larger bar for hair. Hopefully the pic of that piece attached.

Sounds almost like the last few silver finds that I have found-type and dates. I still haven't found a Barber dime in awhile, so perhaps that is next also.

Good chance that part of the barrette is silver, considering the clip part is discolored. If it came out of the ground that shiny then it probably is silver. Regarding the silver test kit, mostly what you will use is the solution and not the stone, but get a kit with both. Some on Ebay. A simple kit shouldn't be more than $10. You can also use the solution on aluminium pieces (tokens, etc.) to eat the crude off of them.
