That shield is Aw some! Is it something from China or Japanese. I would look up some of the symbol's on there.Might stand for a year because they use symbols as signs for a certain a year?I think it could have been part of a decoration type item, but not sure for what item.
I've seen this pattern before in my mothers hand carved mahagony hope chest. It's two geisha girls playing and fan dancing. It was buried for safety in Darwin Australia N.T. during WWII occupation by japanese. In spite of being buried it took a close bomb hit and was fractured and lost some hardware. The hardware is hand hammered brass. I think she said it was made in the phillipines probably around 1900. Nice find...Thanks for the memories~
