It was found several years ago in Moniteau Co, Mo. Can someone tell me what I have here, age style and value. His x-wife snagged most of his artifacts long ago and he has been dividing the rest between the kids. I am very happy he included me by giving me this one. I would like to give him something back for his kindness, then maybe he will take me out to some of his old hunting grounds, Ha Ha. He has told me thats going to happen once we are all healed up, he is recovering from rectal cancer and I just had a major cervical spine surgery ( march 2nd ), second one. Thanks in advance for any help on this. The blade is a little over 5-3/4" by 1-3/4" and the flint shows a fair amount of dark speckles. JYD.

Its leafed shaped maybe a lanceolate blade. Try looking up Agate basin. What it looks like sorta in the overstreets guide.Maybe some of the pros from your area will chime in. Its very nice and hope you both get to feeling much better.

quito, I really dont know what basel grinding is but if another picture is needed I can try that, Thanks. And thank you tnmountains for your kind reply.

The one flaking pic. looks like Agate with the median ridge to me, but maybe a Sedalia digger from another pic. jmo!

I was gonna call it a Sedalia digger. It looks like some of mine.John

Junkyard Dog,

basal grinding is when the edge near the base, or the stem itself, has been ground as to take the sharp edges off, so the halfting material doesn't cut it so easily. It is found on a lot of the earliest types.

Jmo, but it looks way to thick to call it an agate Basin. I've been wrong before, but in my kneck of the woods here in Mo. Its a Sedalia, and it looks like a digger. It even looks like one end has been in the dirt a time or 2. I have some examples if you would like to see em. it might help you make your mind up. JMO. John

Looks like a preform to me. Good father in law I'd say.

I will side with Flintfinder I think is a hoe or digger

thanks quito for the info on basal grinding, let me see if I have this right. they ground down the area so it would not cut into the material thats used to secure the piece to the handle. :icon_scratch:

well badandy it looks like its two to one, I honestly dont know. It is fairly thick, almost 3/4", but to me it looks small for a hoe, but I dont really know what there hoe's looked like, were they a short handled type digger, I cant see this on a long handle but like I said I know very little about artifacts, I sure do want to learn as much as I can. It is very fascinating to me. Flintfinder of Mo. if you get some time I would sure appreciate it if you could post a picture or two of your sedalia diggers. Thanks alot to all for your responses. Good luck to all. JYD

Agree with John & Andy, looks like a Sedalia digger.

Being that its almost 6 inches it fits right into the digger type of artifact! Neanderthal knows his stuff as well does Flint finder of MO. Keep posting the things you have and asking questions, because that how we all learn, and no knows everything. Happy Hunting!
