I know these questions are always asked, and I've been trying to figure it all out by reading all the posts. Still not sure which one I want but leaning towards the MXT.
those of you that have experience with at least two out of the three, which would you prefer?
I live in rural area with lots of old homes, but only an hour from a couple saltwater beaches. I'm not one to wade to deep but not afraid to get my feet wet. I don't care what I find, but old coins fascinate me. Best all around detector in your opinion please, in that price range ($800)

I have the sov gt.....best one of the bunch. GREAT on the beaches according to Sandman. I live in Indiana....and it goes deep. Beach hunting with the iron mask on will net you more goodies and less garbage. If it works great inland....the beach would be $$$$ heaven! ;D

I agree with you of the three mentioned. I have a GT and the Xterra 70 and had the MXT a while back. The GT is a great detector and adjusts to the ground whether inland or at the beach. Super deep at the beach, thats for sure.

Thanks guys, that's 2 for the GT, any other comments/opinions out there?

I have a GT that I got about 5 months ago. I used it at the beach, and it works great. I am still learning this machine, but so far I am impressed with the sensitivity, depth, the double D coil and the iron mask. Any day my S-1 Sunray Probe should arrive which will really help in my goodies recovery, I have read nothing but good stuff about this probe and am excited to use it this week.

I have a Sov GT with the WOT, Sov is a fantastic detector, my only concern was damaging it at the beach by using it in the surf and tripping or a rouge wave, I am in the process of buying a second SOV GT that has been waterproofed. I'm going to have to sale one of my 2 Excals to help finace it. :(

If you get the Sov, take the time to learn it and the tones, you will see what the other owners see and why I am getting a second one waterproofed......

Curious TH where or how your getting a Sov GT waterproofed ? Seems like a dream machine to me.

MD,

I am buying the one that RJ has for sale on the "For Sale" board here. He installed it in an Ikelite case and extended the controls to be used on the outside. He has built several waterproof units. I was talking to him when he was building it to see if I wanted to tackle the job for mine, but decided I did not have the skill to try it on a new unit.

VaBeach Max also has one he waterproofed. I love the Sov with the WOT, I do take mine in the surf, but never above my knees in calm water or midcalf in rough and am always nervous about accidents. By it being waterproofed, I will not be nervous and can hunt deeper. I do not plan to take it underwater at all, but want to be able to hunt waist deep or so using it and the WOT.

There is GOLD in them waters!

Good Luck and good Hunting

Treasure_Hunter,

Why waterproof a Sov GT if you already have an Excal? is it because of the wight or depth? could you explain?

Thank you.

I am not sure if I can explain, except to say I love the Sov, the tones and the way it responds to targets. I also love using the WOT, it covers so much more area in a sweep, it goes deep and it is a hot coil, by hot I mean I do not have to be over a metal target for it to start giving me a tone, just close to one.

I noticed when I first started testing mine that it would give me a tone before I was over the target. I have only seen it do this on shallow targets, maybe up to 4-5 inches, but a lot of jewelry at the beach is at that depth or less.

VaBeachMax also has a waterproofed SOV GT, I am sure if he saw this post he could give you a more technical reason and assessment of the advantages of the Sovereign GT in the surf, I just know it is a fantastic detector, at the beach with the WOT it is a vacuum, many times I am finding 3 targets to my partners 1, and the ability to be able to take it into the surf safely is a huge advantage to me.

I still love the Excal 1000, I have nothing but praise for it, I currently have 2 of them. I am going to sell one of them though to get my money back from buying the waterproofed Sov. I just don't need 2 Excals 1000s, a waterproofed Sov GT with WOT and another Sov GT with a WOT.

..............The Sovereign has a lot more features than the Excalibur i had both detectors sold the Excal. kept the Sovereign. They say the the Sovereign and the Excalibur are the same detector......But not true about the only thing that is the same about them is that they both are 17 Frequency Broad Band [ BBS ] Technology...............if you got your Sovereign Water proofed you would have a much better Surf detector than the Excalibur Plus the Sovereign has a lot more features than the Excal.......But that is why it would be better for it has a lot more features................==Jim==

the Excal is the Sovereign Elite in a water proof box...NOT the GT..iv owned 2 Excals and 3 GT's and the GT was better in every way, just not waterproof.

By now you may have deceided to buy the GT and you should. I own an Excall and a GT and several Tesoros. On the Beach and in wet sand there is not a better detector than the GT. In the water I prefer the Excal. You will not go wrong with the GT, Just be patient and learn the tones. You might also try to find one with a meter. If not a meter when you first purchase it you will benifit from a meter at a later date. BUY THE GT!

Seems you all really like the GT. I'm wondering if any of you have used the MXT. Hard to compare the two if you've only used one. I have decided on the MXT though (made in USA). I won't be using it much on the salt wet sand, and when I do, I'll just do as good as I can. I will be hunting old foundations as much as possible though. My job brings me into many 150 + yr old houses every year. Thanks for the replies.

Did you call Tony?

I still think you should have went with the ..GT.. if you are hunting old house sites the..GT.. has ..Iron Mask.......................The MXT does not have Iron Mask......................==Jim==

Good, Tony can usually answer all your questions. Wish you all the luck with the MXT

I find the Sovereign GT amazing, the more I use it the more amazing I find it. I am about to own 2 of them, new one is waterproofed.......Have one of my Excals up for sale now to finance it, depending on how I like the performance and response of the waterproofed Sov in the surf once I use it, I may sale the other Excal too..
