Spike from a shipwreck??

I'm usually a landlubber but just spent a week in NC at the outerbanks. I found this spike in the sand along the shore.

What can you guys tell me about it? It, of course, is broken but is definitely hand forged. Do you think it is made from copper or brass? Any info would be appreciated.

Looks like maybe a ship spike or a handle or something

Cool, thanks for the reply. I also found a real small one that looks hand made, too. It was so small that I didn't post it.
