Your first detector is a tough decision. My first was a Whites XLT, it was top of the line at the time.
That may have to do with my preference for a screen on most of my detectors.
Audio-only detecting is something to strive for, as most detectors give a lot of information in the audio signal.
If you have a screen, there can be a tendency to rely on the info provided. I am not saying this to sell this detector, just pointing it out as a virtue.
On the plus side, many consider this tesoro as one of the best sub-$500 detectors out there. Terry Soloman is one, I believe he started a thread on this very subject.
On the minus side, I do not like the way this thing pinpoints. This may not be the best choice for a beginner.
Start a thread on the Tesoro page and see what those guys think about this.
It would be time well spent for you.
On one hand, good performance per dollar. On the other, will it be simple enough for a new user?
I cannot say, been detecting too long.
I would NOT want to sell this to you if you would not be happy in the long run.
